How long do khat (miraa) effects last?

Last reviewed

Khat's effects typically begin within 15 to 30 minutes and last around three hours. In a controlled study, plasma levels of cathinone — khat's main stimulant compound — peaked roughly two hours after chewing began. After-effects such as difficulty concentrating and trouble sleeping can persist well beyond that.

Onset, peak and duration

The published pharmacology is fairly consistent. Effects appear within about 15 to 30 minutes of use and last in the region of three hours, with sources placing the active window between roughly 90 minutes and three hours.

A controlled study of khat pharmacokinetics measured peak plasma cathinone concentrations of 127 ± 53 ng/ml, reached 127 ± 30 minutes after chewing started — around two hours. Cathinone is absorbed and cleared relatively quickly, which is why the stimulant window is comparatively short.

The come-down is real

Reported after-effects of khat use include a lack of concentration, numbness and insomnia. These follow the stimulant phase rather than accompanying it, and heavy or late-in-the-day use makes trouble sleeping more likely.

Anyone describing khat as producing energy with no subsequent dip is overstating it. A more accurate description is a comparatively short stimulant window followed, for some people, by a period of poor focus and disrupted sleep.

Why freshness matters

Cathinone is unstable and begins degrading after harvest, converting to cathine — a substantially weaker stimulant. This is why fresh khat has historically been transported fast and at speed to market, and why the age of the leaf materially changes the effect.

It is also why any khat product's potency depends heavily on how it was processed and how long ago. Two servings made from the same plant can differ considerably.

Almost all published khat research studies people chewing fresh leaves over a session lasting several hours. A bottled drink made with khat extract is not the same exposure, so treat these figures as background on the plant rather than as measurements of Jaba Juice.

Quick answers

How quickly does khat start working?
Effects generally begin within 15 to 30 minutes. In controlled measurement, plasma cathinone peaked around two hours — 127 ± 30 minutes — after chewing began.
Does khat keep you awake at night?
It can. Insomnia is among the commonly reported after-effects of khat use, along with difficulty concentrating and numbness, so late-in-the-day use is more likely to disturb sleep.
Why does fresh khat feel stronger?
Cathinone, the stronger of khat's two main stimulant alkaloids, degrades after harvest into cathine, which is considerably weaker. Older leaf therefore produces a milder effect.
